Customarily leatherback turtles come ashore to nest only at night. As such, it was a great surprise to see this female ashore in the waining hours of the afteernoon. As you saw in the above pictures, this afternoon approach worked to her benefit; she had a welcome party. Locals gathered to ensure her safety, assist her as she dug her nest, and wonder at the enornity of this incredible creature.
Did you know that leatherback turtles are the largest turtles on the planet? Their family of turtle dates back over 100 million years.
